Chania Prefecture
Chania is one of the four prefectures of Crete. Covering the westernmost quarter of the island, Chania attracts thousands of visitors every year. It borders with the prefecture of Rethymno to the east. The western part of Crete is washed by the Cretan Sea to the north, and the Mediterranean to the west and south. It is divided in 5 provinces: Apokoronas, Kissamos, Kydonia, Selino and Sfakia. Here is also the southernmost island in Europe, Gavdos.
The prefecture of Chania combines cosmopolitan atmosphere, exotic beaches, natural, coastal and mountainous, beauties and history. The old town of Chania is considered as one of the most beautiful spots on Crete, with its jewel - the charming old Venetian harbour, ideal place for a morning coffee, sightseeing, romantic walks in the evening, shopping and nightlife.
All over Chania visitors will find a number of monuments of Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman periods. There are also a number of interesting museums that travellers to Crete should try to visit such as the Nautical Museum of Crete, the War Museum of Chania, the Archaeological Museum of Chania and the House of El.Venizelos - one of the most important political figures in modern Greek history.
Heading to its west, there is the large coastal resort area of Kato Stalos - Agia Marina - Platanias. This is the most cosmopolitan resort within the prefecture of Chania and the western Crete, and it’s the place where the fun throughout the day and night, takes place in the beach-bars & clubs of the area.
