Drama Prefecture
The Regional Unit of Drama is located in the northeastern part of Greece, on the border with Bulgaria and is perhaps the richest area of the country when it comes to its natural environment. It is surrounded by the mountains of Rhodope in the north, Menikio and Orvilou mountains on the west and Paggeo on the south. The mountain with the highest peak is Falakro, the "symbol of" Drama. The local economy is rural. There are large farmland plains stretching all the way to the south, which produce various products. Drama is famous for its beans and potatoes that are cultivated on the plateau of Nevrokopi in the north of the region. The breeding of livestock also plays an important role in the economy. The same goes for forestry and manufacturing. Finally, the local economy also relies on the use of marble and in general of the mineral wealth of the region.
Administrative and commercial center of the region is the city of Drama. Other important centers are the towns of Kalampaki, Paranesti, Kato Nevrokopi and Prosotsani. You can go to Drama via both the national rail network and through national highways, while the nearest airport is that of Chrysoupoli in Kavala. Although it is many kilometers from Athens and the rest of southern Greece, a visit to Drama is rewarding because of the beautiful nature, warm hospitality of the people and interesting folk culture of the region.
